The Modern Dad - Books
Jonathan Livingston Seagull – A fable, telling the story of a seagull who knows there’s more to life than, in the words of Eric Cantona, following the trawler. A book given to me by my father to help me find the courage to walk my own path.
The Tao of Pooh – A beautiful introduction to the principles of Taoism, from the gentle natural flow of life and how we can live and act in harmony with that flow through letting go of our ego and a cluttered mind.
The beginners guide to Stoicism – A great easy digest of the basic tenets of Stoicism, with a capital S, none of your stiff upper lip, strong, silent type here. Just a very absorbable introduction to the tools and practices of living well, with intention and emotional resilience.
The Modern Dad - Films
Interstellar – You could watch almost any “Sad Man in Space” film and find themes of the parent/child relationship but for me Interstellar is one of its finest examples. Cooper’s hopes for his children are the backbone of the film and drive him through his quest.
The Road – Viggo Mortensen gives an incredible performance as a father facing unbearably difficult choices in his mission to find a safe place for his son before it’s too late. I found his grim determination, unerring hope and dedication to his child the perfect allegory of what fatherhood means to me.
Juno – Well, Mac MacGuff really. JK Simmons is perfect in the role of a father who unconditionally loves, trusts and supports his daughter through a, and I quote, “garbage dump of a situation”. A fantastic film, a great script and an amazing cast.
The Modern Dad - Podcasts
On the Mend – One of my fascinations is with the mindset of recovered addicts, the journey of self-reflection and discovery is inspiring for anyone interested in personal growth and Matt Willis covers the topic with sensitivity and humour perfectly.
Armchair Expert – Another recovered addict Dax Shepherd is brilliant in these long form interviews, his interest and willingness to listen, learn and challenge is refreshing. There’s so much there to look through but I particularly recommend the Experts on Expert episodes covering topics from anthropology to psychology via sports and business leaders.
Parenting Hell – One of my wife’s favourites, Josh Widdecombe and Rob Beckett started this over lockdown as a way to process and find the levity in their parenting challenges during the pandemic and now beyond, very relatable and very funny.
